GCC Professor Saves Home From Recent Forest Fire, Writes Book About Dramatic Experience
In summer 2002, Bob Thompson went to Vallecito Valley, near Colorado's San Juan mountains,, to protect his summer home which was threatened by the raging, month-long Missionary Ridge Fire. The Glendale Community College biology/forrestry professor, who had previous fire-fighting experience, defended and saved his home, taking dramatic photos along the way. He has just published a book about his amazing experience titled FIRE STORY--VALLECITO BURNING: A Personal Account of the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire. He chronicles his struggle with 180 powerful photos and crisp prose. The book is filled with stories of successes, failures, emotional highs and lows, heroism, cooperation, good people, good intentions, luck (both good and bad), an unwieldy and often frustrating federal bureaucracy, and the awesome power of nature unleashed. The photos are particularly amazing, as Thompson carried a small digital camera everywhere he went and documented the fire in ways that reporters could not. A pilot, he also took incredible aerial photos. This is a gripping human interest story and a powerful depiction of one of nature's most formidable disasters.
GCC Theater Presents World Premier of "Crazy Days of Summer"
The world premier of a new play, "Crazy Days of Summer," will be performed by Glendale Community College (GCC) theater students and directed by GCC faculty Mark DeMichele Performances will be held in the GCC Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 8 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 28, and March 4, 5, and 6. A matinee will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 29. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students, seniors, and children. Misperceptions abound in this zany generational comedy of clashing cultures, couples, and life styles, as matriarch Willie Hoover struggles to keep her family members and their friends in check during her annual President Herbert Hoover birthday barbeque. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale; plenty of free parking is available in the north parking lot near the PAC. Visit
