Dr. Warren H. Stewart, Sr. to Lecture at GCC for Black History Month
Dr. Warren H. Stewart, Sr., senior pastor of First Institutional Baptist Church (FIBC) of Phoenix, will deliver the keynote address for Black History Month at Glendale Community College (GCC). Titled "The Role of the African Church in Education and the Community," his address will be held at noon on Thursday, Feb. 26, in the GCC Student Union Lounge. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale; the lecture is free and open to the public.
GCC President Phil Randolph says, "We are honored and pleased to have Dr. Stewart lecture at GCC. He is widely known to be a man of conscience and commitment to social justice and human rights issues. I encourage the GCC campus and the community to attend and hear this pre-eminent speaker."
Stewart's extensive educational credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy from Bishop College, Dallas, Texas; a Master of Divinity and a Master of Sacred Theology from Union Theological Seminary, New York, New York; a Doctor of Ministry from American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, California; and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas. In 1982 he received the Award of Excellence in Black Church Studies from the Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies, Los Angeles, California.
Locally and nationally, Stewart has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations from churches, colleges, universities, civic organizations and community groups. The Arizona Republic recognized him as "one of the ten most influential religious leaders in the Valley" (Oct. 6, 1985); the Phoenix Gazette 1993 Hall of Fame listed him as "one of ten people whose achievements have had the most notable effect on....Arizona;" the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) called him a "living legend" on Jan. 20, 2002; and he received the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Phoenix in 2003.
Stewart is the prolific author of numerous articles and sermons in major publications. He is also the author of two books, Interpreting God's Word in Black Preaching, now in its fifth printing, and How to Handle Giants: Sermons to African American Youth and Their Mentors. He has served as Adjunct Professor at Ottawa University in Phoenix and at Phoenix Seminary.
A family man, Stewart is the father of five sons and one daughter; he also has two grandchildren.
Stewart's ministry has led him to preach in 37 U.S. states and territories and 31 foreign countries. Under his leadership, FIBC built a church and parsonage for the First Institutional Baptist Church of Soweto, Republic of South Africa. In addition, FIBC established Samaritan House for homeless families and Ujima House for unwed teenage mothers.
The ultimate establishment of a Martin Luther King, Jr. state holiday in Arizona was assisted by the considerable efforts of Stewart and committees he served on. He organized and led Victory Together, a broad-based coalition that was instrumental in the 1989 passage of the statewide MLK, Jr. holiday.
