Turning Blindness into an Asset: Motivational Speaker at GCC, Feb. 11
An inspiring motivational speaker will share her experiences at noon, Wed., Feb. 11, in the Glendale Community College (GCC) Student Union Lounge. In 1984, Beth Finke lost her sight as a newlywed at age 25. She subsequently lost a good job, experienced several failed surgeries, and gave birth to a son with a genetic disorder and multiple handicaps. Her desperate quest to find work led to a job modeling nude for a college art class. She published an essay on that experience, which ultimately led to jobs writing weekly commentaries for newspapers, free-lance essays, and national magazine articles. Today she is a public speaker and a frequent guest on National Public Radio (NPR) programs. Her memoir, Long Time, No See, was published last year. Jointly sponsored by the GCC Speakers Forum and GCC Disability Services, Finke will appear with her guide dog, Hanni. Her lecture is free and open to the public. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale.
Glendale Community College Showcases Art Faculty Talent
The creative and talented people who teach art at Glendale Community College (GCC) will present their work in a faculty art exhibit at the college, Feb. 23 through Mar. 3. This always well-attended annual exhibit is an opportunity to display the individual and artistic visions of the members of the GCC Art Department. Works representing various media will be on display from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge. The exhibit is free and open to the public; GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale.
Public "Poetry Slam" at Glendale Community College, Feb. 25
Poetry lovers are invited to participate in a free, high-energy "Poetry Slam" in the Student Union Lounge at Glendale Community College (GCC) on Wed., Feb. 25, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Black Cat Poets, GCC's poetry and literature club, the Slam boasts a popular faculty member as emcee and Barnes and Noble gift certificates for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners ($100, $75 and $25). The event is open to anyone over 18, and all participants will have the opportunity to read in the first round. Judges will decide the line-up for subsequent rounds, so participants are advised to bring at least three poems they can read with energy and passion. Pre-registration for this free, fun event is required. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. For more information, a copy of the slam rules, and a registration form, contact English faculty and club sponsor Johnnie Clemens May at
