GCC Theater Team Selected for Competition, Feb. 9-15
One of only eight teams selected from 143 nominees, a Glendale Community College (GCC) team of theater students and faculty has been invited to participate in the prestigious Regional American College Theater Festival competition. It will be held at Cal State San Bernardino, Feb. 9-15, 2004. The competition is sponsored by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Winners at the Regional level will later compete at the Kennedy Center. The GCC troupe will perform a trilogy of short Japanese character plays, Kyogen3, directed by GCC theater faculty Joni Koehn. Selected students will also be up for individual acting awards and will perform selected scenes from Two by Two, directed by GCC theater faculty Virginia Ludders. GCC Hosts Community College Speech Invitational, Feb. 13
Glendale Community College (GCC) will host the 2004 College Speech Invitational Tournament on Fri., Feb. 13, 2004. GCC employees and the public are invited to attend this free event. A list of campus locations for the final rounds will be posted in the GCC Student Union. The finals will be the most interesting, as superior participants will remain to perform. All events will be either oral interpretation (acting events) or public speeches. Acting events include dramatic scenes from movies and plays; prose performances from novels, short stories, or biographies; poetry performances; and dramatic duos. Public speeches include informative speaking, persuasive speaking, speech to entertain (also known as after-dinner speaking), and communication analysis. Participants come from all over the U.S. This year's entrants include community college and university students from Texas, Utah, California, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky, and more. "Overcome Your Fear of Returning to School," at GCC, Feb. 5 & 6
The counseling department at Glendale Community College (GCC) offers free public workshops and seminars to help potential students overcome their fear of entering or re-entering college. "Overcoming Your Fear of Returning to School" will be offered twice: Thurs., Feb. 5, and Fri., Feb. 6. The workshops will be held from 12:00-12:50 p.m. in room 108 of the Counseling and Career Services (CCS) Building. For a campus map showing the location of the CCS building, click on

Instructor will be GCC Counselor Bruce Thomas, who says, "Returning to school does not have to be intimidating or frustrating. This workshop shows 'how college works' and de-mystifies resources available to make the transition easier." For individuals who are already in college, the GCC Counseling Department offers a series of one-hour workshops called the "How to Get Good Grades in College Series." Ten one-hour Friday workshops throughout the semester will address crucial topics such as "Managing Your Time Well," "Learning How to Learn," "Taking Good Notes," "How to Take Tests," and more.
