African-American Artists Celebrated at Glendale Community College, Feb. 2-18
February is African-American History Month, and Glendale Community College will mark it with an art exhibit displaying the works of contemporary African-American artists. The works represent a portion of the renowned collection of Dr. Eugene Grigsby, noted Phoenix educator and community leader. An artist himself, Grigsby is retired from the ASU Art Department. For many years, he has nurtured and supported local African-American artists, many of whom have attained national prominence. His personal collection is extensive and contains many works of artists he has mentored. These contemporary artworks reveal each artists' unique and personal viewpoints expressed in the media of paint, printmaking, and drawing. Selections will be on display in the GCC Student Union Lounge from Feb. 2 through Feb. 18, 2004, and will include some of Grisgby's own works as well. On Feb. 2, Grigsby and the other artists will attend an opening night reception with refreshments from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public. GCC Graduate Chosen as Keynote Speaker for All-USA Academic Team Luncheon
Overcoming many serious obstacles, single parent and Peoria resident Lisa Natham graduated with Honors from Glendale Community College (GCC) in 2002 and has been asked to share her experiences with a statewide audience. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree from ASU West where she maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Natham has been chosen as the keynote speaker for the All-USA Academic Team luncheon at Mesa Community College (MCC) on Feb. 12. The luncheon honors all Arizona community college students nominated for the All-USA Academic Team. Twenty students will be selected nationally for each of the first, second and third teams. The 20 First Team students will be honored at a convention in Minneapolis, will receive $2,500 scholarships, and will have their photos and accomplishments listed in USA TODAY. Natham was an All-USA Academic First Team student in 2002 while she was a student at GCC. Joining her at the luncheon on Feb. 12 will be GCC's two nominees for this year's All-USA Academic team, Sarah Herda and Stefanie Mantz. For more information about Glendale Community College or a class schedule, call 623-845-3314. (Lisa Natham photo attached at end of doc.)
