GCC Biotechnology Program Wins Funding, Expands Training and Outreach
An infusion of $268,000 in new funding will allow Glendale Community College (GCC) to expand its new Biotechnology Program and produce more graduates who can immediately contribute to the Valley's emerging biotechnology industry. GCC received the funding as the result of a competitive Proposition 301 application process; in fact, the award is the largest biotech award to any of the 10 Maricopa community colleges. Funds will be used to purchase lab equipment and provide significant upgrades in library holdings in the area of biotechnology. The GCC Biotechnology Program is poised to produce well-trained graduates who can compete successfully for positions in research and development, bio-manufacturing, drug discovery and testing, and more. Prop. 301 funds must be used for workforce development and career technical training. The funds come from certain state sales taxes, and Arizona community college districts receive funds every year. Funds awarded to MCCD are divided among its ten campuses by an MCCD committee, based on grants written by each college. Those interested in more information about the GCC Biotechnology Program may contact Tuohy at

Glendale Community College Chosen to Host Prestigious Online Journal
An interactive, national scholarly journal on Spanish literature is now hosted on GCC's website and edited by a GCC professor--the only community college scholar on the journal's national editorial board. Laberinto ("Labyrinth"), a peer-edited journal, is dedicated to commentaries and studies of the literature of Spain's "early modern period." Spanning roughly the years 1450-1750, this period is also called the Spanish Golden Age, as it produced great authors such as Cervantes, Calderón, and Lope de Vega. This electronic journal for scholars utilizes audio and video segments to illustrate works submitted. For example, a commentary about a play of Calderón's might be illustrated with video footage of a production of one of his plays. Laberinto debuted at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1998 and was hosted on its website until recently. It is now maintained by GCC's Dr. James T. Abraham, who collaborated with its original designers in 1998. All works chosen for Laberinto are selected by a 13-member editorial board. Abraham is the only Community College professor on this board; others are from universities, including UC Berkeley, Smith College, University of Virginia, Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan, and more. Abraham specializes in literature from Spain's Golden Age; he currently maintains the Laberinto web page hosted from the GCC web page. Visit
