Glendale Community College ACE-Plus Program Gets $15,000 HUD Grant
The ACE-Plus Program at Glendale Community College (GCC) has received a $15,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program designed to expose high school students to a college environment and course work, and teach them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. Most students in the program are the first in their families to attend college and most are minority students--largely Hispanic. The HUD funds will help pay tuition and fees for students, salaries for staff, student support activities, book loans and student supplies. For more information on ACE-Plus, contact program director Dr. Ibrahim Naim at
ibrahim.naim@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3089.
Wide Variety of GCC Dance Classes Offered to Community
Lovers of dance may be surprised to learn that many dance and dance humanities classes at Glendale Community College (GCC) are open to the public and require no pre-requisite classes. Several involve the study of dance rather than actual dancing. Dance in Film is a survey of famous dancers in film from the hand-tinted frames of the late 1800s to today's latest MTV videos. World Dance Perspectives is an exploration and analysis of the role of dance in various cultures around the world--from ritual to performance. Exploring Dance Careers presents an overview of opportunities in dance and dance-related professions for those wondering how to make a living in dance. Dance Workshop--Musical Theatre Dance gives workshop experience in the technique of musical theatre dance. It is open to all dance ability levels and will involve studying various choreographers, learning classic dances, and creating new dances. Final projects will be presented in a workshop performance. For more information on any of these classes, call GCC enrollment at 623-845-3333 or Lenna DeMarco, GCC Dance Program Director, at 623-845-3796. Or visit

Agriculture Students Develop West Valley Partnerships
The Glendale Community College (GCC) Agribusiness and Urban Horticulture Program has formed a partnership with Peoria High School (PHS) that has resulted in shared high-tech facilities and projects. According to Mike Gillispie, the Program's Coordinator, "The Biotech Partnership enables GCC students to use the PHS biotechnology lab to grow stem and leaf tissue cultures of landscape plants in test tubes. This allows such experimental seedlings to grow in an observable and germ free area and to be manipulated by the addition of plant growth hormones to grow roots or shoots--depending on the experiment." Successful seedlings are ultimately transplanted and used for landscaping.
The Turf Grass and Recreation Management Program allows student AG interns to help maintain and perform experiments on golf course turf, including the golf courses at Peoria High School, the Peoria Sports Complex, and the Maryvale Sports Complex. Students use information gleaned from their work with GCC's on-campus Turf Research Center, which contains six types of turf for student experimentation and study. For more information about any Agribusiness programs, contact Mike Gillispie at mike.gillispie.gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3168.
