GCC Faculty Team Finalists in Community College Competition
One of the most prestigious college awards programs has selected a Glendale Community College (GCC) faculty team as one of 10 national finalists. GCC psychology professor Dr. René Díaz-Lefebvre and his team of faculty from other disciplines have been nominated for the Bellwether Award from the Community College Futures Assembly (CCFA) in the category of Instructional Programs and Services. The team has developed a program of instruction based on the theory that we all learn differently (Multiple Intelligences). Students are given learning options (projects or performances based on their learning styles) that allow them to absorb class material in innovative ways that make learning easier. The GCC program is called Multiple Intelligences/Learning for Understanding (MI/LfU). The GCC team will make a group presentation at the annual CCFA Conference in Orlando, Florida, Jan. 31-Feb. 3, competing with nine other finalists. Winner will be announced at conference.
GCC Hosts "DUI Awareness Day" Free Activities, Dec. 10
Every 33 minutes someone in America dies in an alcohol-related collision. This situation escalates during the holidays. Attend "DUI Awareness Day" at the central mall on the campus of Glendale Community College (GCC) on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and learn what you can do to enjoy a safe holiday season. Phoenix Police Department Detective Lynn Butcher will be available for tips, questions, and conversation. She will also conduct mock field sobriety tests with the "Fatal Vision" goggles that distort vision/balance and create "virtual impairment." Attempting to perform the sobriety tests while wearing them delivers a surprising lesson to people who think they are capable of driving responsibly under the influence. Wearing them also teaches people to recognize symptoms of impairment. Information will be available about the choices and results of driving under the influence. All the day's events are free.
GCC Alumni Association Elects Officers and Board
At the recent Glendale Community College Alumni Association Annual Meeting and Mixer, four officers and seven board members were elected to serve from January 2004 through June 2005. Three of the four officers live in Glendale or Peoria. Officers are Jean Bihn, President; Bob Norris, Vice-President; Patty Riley, Secretary; and Chuck Pierce, Treasurer. Board Members are Richard Arce, Erika Gonzales, Julie Knapp, Troy Riley, William Teske, Bob Webb, and Jeanne Zingsheim.
Psychology Honor Students Sponsor Teddy Bear Drive
Needy and hospitalized children will receive teddy bears and other stuffed animals thanks to caring college students. The Glendale Community College (GCC) honor society for psychology students, Psi Beta, is collecting the toys to be distributed during the holidays. Bins for collecting the little critters are in the Psychology Department (04 building), and outside the Student Life Office in the GCC Student Union Building. The drive continues through Dec. 10; GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Information: 623-845-3615.
