"World Aids Day" Free Events at GCC, Dec. 1

In America, someone is infected with HIV every 13 minutes. Concerned about the welfare of its students and the community, Glendale Community College (GCC) is again hosting activities to mark World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Free confidential HIV testing, with results in 20 minutes, will be conducted in the Student Union from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In the Student Union Lounge, speakers and video presentations will run continuously from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Videos will include "Living Positive: The Magic Johnson Story," and "Heart of America"--a video diary of the 2002 World AIDS Day by U2's Bono and other celebrities. Speakers on AIDS topics will attend from the American Red Cross and AIDS Project AZ. Free refreshments and information from many organizations that deal with AIDS related issues will be available throughout the day in the Student Union Breezeway. For more information, call the GCC Office of Student Life at 623-845-3525.

GCC Prominent at State AACHE Conference

Faculty from Glendale Community College (GCC) played prominent roles at the annual conference of the Arizona Association of Hispanics for Higher Education (AACHE) held in Tucson Nov. 21. Dr. Ernesto Escobedo, GCC Math faculty, was installed as the incoming president of the organization; Dr. René Díaz-Lefebvre, GCC Psychology faculty, gave the keynote address; and GCC Advancement Director George A. Martinez made a brief presentation on behalf of GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph. Díaz-Lefebvre also received the Distinguished Faculty Award. AACHE is a statewide non-profit organization. Founded in 1983, it promotes educational and employment opportunities within Arizona colleges and universities. Other GCC personnel attended the conference, including Melinda Ornelas, program advisor for the GCC AZTEC program; and Jose Mendoza, Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs.
