GCC-Trained Police Excel at Police and Fire Games
Ten of the twelve Glendale Police Department (GPD) personnel who won medals at the recent Mesa Police and Fire Games were once students or instructors at Glendale Community College (GCC). Former GPD Lt. Bobby Bruce taught for the highly respected GCC Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) for several years, and GPD personnel Gary Bohannon, Chuck Buffington, Jay Bullins, Steve Hadley, Don Kralovetz, Dave Madeya, Paul Reger, Nick Susuras, and Tom Vickers are all former GCC students. The competition included outdoor sports such as swimming, baseball, fishing, archery, basketball, softball, and motocross as well as weight-lifting and target shooting. The GCC alumni won a total of 12 gold medals, 7 silver, and 6 bronze. Since its inception in 1978, the GCC LETA has graduated approximately 500 certified peace officers. For information about this program, visit www.gccleta.com or call GCC LETA Coordinator Jerry McCown at 623-845-3831.

GCC Art Department Collecting Food for St. Mary's Food Bank
Responding to a dire need for food from St. Mary's Food Bank, (SMFB), the Glendale Community College (GCC) Art Department is hosting a holiday food drive and invites the community to participate along with GCC employees. SMFB is a nonprofit organization which collects food and distributes it to other agencies and individuals. This year, food and cash donations are down, but the need has risen. While any donation is appreciated, the following items are in most demand: canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, rice, cereal, pasta, and beans. SMFB also needs the following items for the infant boxes it provides: diapers, powdered infant formula, jarred juices, baby wipes, and baby cereal. Now through Dec. 13, donations may be dropped off at the GCC Art Department in the Fine Arts (FA) building, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The FA building is on the east side of campus, easily reached from the Vogel Avenue entrance north of Olive off of 59th Avenue. For more information about the food drive or hours of drop-off, call the GCC Art Department at 623-845-3757.
