Peacocks Go To School Too--at Glendale Community College
Peacocks yearn for education too. At least that's how it appears to anyone observing the Glendale Community College (GCC) campus over the last 37 years. Peacocks have lived just north of GCC at historic Sahuaro Ranch Park since 1898. By the late 1930s, a flock of 200-300 birds called the Ranch home. Over the years, the free-ranging peacocks often wandered as far as five or ten miles from the Ranch. When the GCC campus opened in 1966, the peacocks trudged in surprising numbers through the small orange grove that separated the Ranch and GCC. (Peacocks can fly, but only for short distances.) Even today, some students emerge from classrooms to the sight of a magnificent spread of tail-feathers or an ear-splitting squawk. Maybe the semi-tame birds are looking for flying classes or "tail"-gating parties. Females have even laid their eggs on campus. Ranch personnel never needed to retrieve their beautiful pets as the birds eventually sauntered home; they did however retrieve and return the eggs to the Ranch. Over the years, as the orange grove turned into a parking lot, the peacock migrations have lessened. But every now and then, to the delight of new generations of students, a few hardy peacocks or peahens still brave the hot asphalt to search for education and enlightenment at their neighborhood college. As these exquisite creatures wander the sidewalks of academia, dazzling all who see them, one thing is for certain. They sure don't need a "Dress for Success" class.
"Readfest" & Annual Used Book Sale Will Bring Thousands to GCC Campus
Thousands of K-4th grade children will be brought to the central mall of Glendale Community College (GCC) for the eighth-annual GCC Readfest extravaganza on Nov. 12. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., they will enjoy activities that reveal the adventure and excitement of reading and emphasize its importance. Read-aloud booths, displays and other activities will be offered, and professionally costumed "storybook" characters will wander the campus interacting with the children. The cast of characters will include the Cat in the Hat, the Queen of Hearts, Merlin, Snow White, Grumpy, Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Little Bo Peep, Dorothy & Toto, the Little Mermaid, Minnie Mouse, Cinderella and more. The community is invited to support this literacy-based program for children by shopping the Used Book Sale that will also be held in the GCC Mall at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The book sale will be held Nov. 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Nov. 13th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be more books than ever to choose from this year--literally thousands of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books, both hardback and softback. Small donations are all that are asked for each book. Plenty of free parking is available in the north GCC parking lot, easily accessible from the 59th Avenue and Vogel campus entrance. For more information, call 623-845-3810.
Explosive Fun at Glendale Community College Homecoming Game Nov. 15
Bring the whole family to the Glendale Community College (GCC) Homecoming football game on Saturday Nov. 15. It promises to be a real "bang-up" event. Children will enjoy the festivities as fireworks donated by the GCC Student Government punctuate the game, with displays planned after the national anthem and after every GCC score. The GCC Gauchos play the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds at 7:00 p.m. at Matt O. Hanhila Field. Depending on the length of the game, the fireworks may extend as late as midnight. Plenty of free parking is available. Ticket prices are: $3 for adults; $2 for seniors, children over six, and students; and free for children under six and GCC students with ID. For more information, contact GCC Athletics at 623-845-3040.
