GCC Surveying Small Glendale Businesses to Determine Training Needs
Thirty-eight small businesses in Glendale (75 to 500 employees) are being surveyed by Glendale Community College (GCC) about the training needs of their employees. Collaborating with economic development specialists from the City of Glendale and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, GCC will determine what those needs are and how the college might be able to help. Randy Kimmens, GCC Senior Associate Dean of Instruction, is working with Mike Bennett from the City of Glendale and Don Rinehart from the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. According to Kimmens, "these 38 identified businesses will receive first a mailing, then follow-up phone calls, and, if they wish, interviews and site visits. We want to identify training needs that they have for their employees and begin a dialog to determine how we can supply these training needs." The survey is expected to be completed by the end of this calendar year.
Archived GCC News Releases Now Searchable by Keyword
An essential service provided by Glendale Community College has just become infinitely more useful through the addition of a powerful new keyword search capability. The GCC News Service, provided weekly to the media, is archived and available to the public at
http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/news/ on the GCC web site. Until recently, the news releases have been archived by date only. Web re-design has now made GCC's news releases searchable by keyword. Entering a word such as "lecture" will bring up all releases dealing with lectures on campus; entering "president" will bring up releases dealing with GCC's president, and so forth. To access GCC releases, visit

GCC Offers Free International Films to the Community in November
Forget the high price of movies. Glendale Community College (GCC) is offering two free international films to the community on Nov. 7 and 21. Sponsored by the International Students Program (ISP) at GCC, two highly esteemed foreign films will be shown in MU-151 (Music Building) on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. An Australian film, Rabbit Proof Fence, will be shown Friday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. This film is based on a true story about three mixed race (Aboriginal and White) girls who flee western Australia. They leave their lives as domestic servants when they are not allowed to recognize their Aboriginal roots, and set off on an incredible 1500 kilometer journey across the Outback. This film addresses both sides of the race debate in Australia. On Friday, Nov. 21, at 2:30 p.m. in MU-151, a Korean film titled The Way Home will be shown. It is in Korean with English subtitles and is about a bratty young Korean boy who is sent to the country by his family to stay with his mute grandmother. At first he amuses himself by hurting his grandmother, calling her names, and hiding her things. He eventually becomes enamored of the simpler country life and gains respect for his family and his elders. Both films are free and open to the public as a service of the International Students Program and GCC. For more information call ISP Director Ken Bus at 623-845-3136.
