GCC Scholarship Awards Increase by 10% in 2003-2004
Glendale Community College has broken a record by awarding $857,190 in GCC institutional, Honors, and MCCD Foundation scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year. This is a 10.4% increase over last year. Accounting for this increase have been record numbers of gifts from individuals, small businesses, corporations, clubs, college staff, and faculty. Through the generosity of all donors, GCC has been able to provide assistance to students well beyond federal and state grants. "It is remarkable that we were able to show a double-digit increase this year, particularly in light of the challenging economic environment. Many businesses and organizations have cut their budgets and Foundations have tightened their award criteria," says GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph. Visit

Recipients of this award must demonstrate academic success and have performed at least 100 hours of community service within the past 12 months. More scholarships are needed to make college possible for students. Anyone wishing to give to scholarship funds should call Development Coordinator Judy Blake at 623-845-3481.
"Star Trek" Illustrator, GCC Alumnus, To Speak at GCC Oct. 20
If you're amazed by the illustrations, special effects, and graphic designs in Star Trek movies, you have seen the work of Glendale Community College alumnus John Eaves. Eaves graduated from GCC in 1983 with an AA in General Studies. He is returning to his alma mater to present his work Monday, Oct. 20 at noon in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Eaves worked as a graphic artist, designer, and illustrator on Star Trek movies. He works in the same capacity for Dreamworks, a production company of Steven Spielberg. In addition to his movie credits, he published a book of his art work. His visual presentation reveals the behind-the-scenes evolution of images that germinate in his imagination. It is a fascinating demonstration of the processes by which ideas are turned into drawings and drawings are turned into motion picture images. For information about parking or location, call 623-845-3000. Those attending over their lunch hour may bring their lunch. The event is offered as a community service by the college. This program and parking are free. Visit
