Disney World Hires 27 GCC Students as Interns
The West Valley will be well represented at Disney World this spring and summer when more than two dozen residents of Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, and other communities work there as paid interns. Specifically, 31 Valley college students—27 of them from Glendale Community College (GCC)—have been hired by Disney World to work full-time in areas such as operations, merchandising, restaurant services, costuming, and character roles. In September, GCC hosted a hiring team from Disney that interviewed more than 65 Valley students seeking internships. This opportunity was arranged by GCC Career Center Director Bil Morrill who says "We are thrilled so many Valley students received opportunities to experience internships with a company as prestigious as Disney. We are also pleased that such premier employers come to our campus looking for local talent--and they find it!" Students hired are available for interviews; contact Suzanne Higgins for access and more information, 623-845-3808.
Genomics Lecture at GCC by Acclaimed Researcher Dr. Jeffrey Trent, Oct. 15
One of the nation's foremost cancer researchers and the leader of the Valley's new genomics initiative, Dr. Jeffrey Trent, will bring information on genomics research to the West Valley on October 15 at 11:00 a.m. This free presentation is open to the public and hosted by the Glendale Community College Honors Program in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Trent will address the topics of genetics, genomics, and how these fields can be used in the battles against diseases such as cancer. "These biotech fields are currently of growing interest to students. This fall and next spring, GCC is offering the first of several new courses that over time we plan to develop into both a two-year degree and a university transfer degree in Biotechnology," according to GCC's Senior Associate Dean of Instruction, Randy Kimmens. Dr. Jeffrey Trent is President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Translational Genomics Research Institute and Scientific Director of the International Genomics Consortium.
