Alternative Musician to Speak and Perform at GCC
Pioneering musician, painter, poet, and speaker, Magdalen Hsu-Li is fast becoming a star in the acoustic/pop/folk/alternative genres. Through the Glendale Community College Speaker's Forum, she will be lecturing and doing a short performance on campus Wednesday, Oct. 8, at noon. The program is free to the public and will be held in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 6000 West Olive Avenue. Magdalen is opening new doors of expression for Asian-Americans and is poised to become a cross-cultural pop icon. Her shows are increasingly popular on college campuses and her recent CD "Fire" was selected as one of Performing Songwriters' "12 Best Independent Releases of the Year." She emphasizes diversity in her work and says, "One of the problems of our society is lack of awareness of our wealth of cultural diversity. I hope I will always be defining issues of identity, raising awareness, and bringing communities together through my music." Her website is www.magdalenhsuli.com
GCC Readfest Needs Volunteers
A Glendale Community College signature annual event--Readfest-- will be held November 12 and the college needs volunteers. Sponsored by GCC's Center for Learning, Readfest is an all day event which brings several thousand K-4th grade students to the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue where they enjoy activities that reveal the adventure and excitement of reading and emphasize its importance. Local dignitaries participate in the day-long "read-aloud" story-telling; colorful displays bring awareness to problems caused by illiteracy. Many food booths, games and costumed story-book characters add to the fun. A large used book sale is held as part of Readfest. The Readfest Committee needs volunteers for many tasks supporting Readfest; anyone interested in volunteering should call Dolly Marden at 623-845-3525. Donations for the used book sale should be directed to Dave Gallett at 623-845-3126. Any other Readfest issues should be directed to Alice Estrada at 623-845-3810. The community can also support Readfest financially by patronizing the "Books are Fun" Book Sale fundraiser on Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Counseling and Career Center lobby.
