"22 X 30 Group" To Unveil Art at GCC, Oct. 29
Watercolor paintings by 15 professional valley artists celebrating their 15th anniversary as a group, will be displayed at Glendale Community College (GCC) September 29 through October 15. The free opening night reception will be held in the GCC Student Union Building Lounge at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The collection can be viewed each day from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The artists belong to the "22 X 30 Group"--so named because 22" by 30" is the standard size for watercolor paper. The group is celebrating its 25th anniversary with this art show. Though membership has changed slightly through the years, the purpose of the group--to meet socially, share their love of painting, and critique each other's work--has remained the same. Though many in the group paint in several water-based media, watercolor is a favorite. The art show is free to the public.
Japanese Theater Trilogy Presented in October
Kyogen3 is a production of Glendale Community College (GCC) consisting of three, short, funny, traditional Japanese theater pieces, performed in English. GCC will present original translations of "Poison (Busu), "The Persimmon" (Kaki Yamabushi), and "Mushrooms" (Kusabira). Kyogen theater was born in medieval Japan, becoming quite popular in the late 1300s. Kyogen plays reflect the habits, customs, and lives of ordinary people in short, comic sketches. They often feature short ballads, improvisation, and satire on social evils and human behavior. Generally there are only two or three actors per sketch and few props are used. Kyogen3 will run Oct. 2, 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. On Oct. 5 there is a performance at 2:00 p.m. All will be held in the GCC Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and students with I.D. There is ample free parking near the PAC, which is most easily accessed from 59th Avenue north of Olive.
GCC Faculty Receives AZLA's Top Award
Linda Landrum, adjunct instructor of Italian and Spanish at Glendale Community College (GCC), recently received The Arizona Language Association (AZLA) award for Outstanding Secondary School Educator. Landrum also teaches Spanish at Greenway High School where she is Foreign Language Chair. She received the award, bestowed for outstanding high school Spanish instruction, at the 2003 AZLA conference held at GCC Sept. 19 and 20. AZLA's membership consists of foreign language and ESL teachers from all educational levels--elementary, secondary, college, and university. GCC foreign language faculty and current AZLA president Dr. Joyce Story says, "in addition to Linda's excellent teaching skills, she also initiated and taught the first Maricopa Community College District foreign language video-conference-network course in Italian."
