"Test-Anxiety" Expertise Available at GCC
Test anxiety is running rampant in Arizona--but experts at GCC can help! AIMS test failures by high school students and the beginning of the fall semester have high school and college students alike seeking support about test anxiety. Glendale Community College offers credit classes which deal with such concerns and also have experts trained to deal with test anxiety. GCC Counseling Chair Susan High says, "test anxiety in most individuals is highly 'treatable,' and can usually be reduced or resolved once students get some information and learn a few techniques." High is available to the news media for interviews about test anxiety. High school counselors or others who may wish further information on this subject can reach her at
s.high@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3052.
Mickey Mouse Wants You! Disney World Internship Interviews at GCC Sept. 15
College or university students who have a GPA of at least 2.0 are eligible to apply for internships with Walt Disney World in Florida. These are internships designed to help students make industry connections and learn from a leader in the entertainment industry. Disney World personnel will make presentations and interview students for these internships at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Center, 6000 W. Olive Avenue, on Monday, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. Most colleges allow their students to receive credit for internships and to be considered full-time students while completing them. Interested students must bring completed applications to the presentations (print one from the Application Section of the Disney Internship web site at
http://www.wdwcollegeprogram.com) to be scheduled for an interview. This site also gives information about internships, how they work, addresses, frequently asked questions and more.
Scholarship to Benefit GCC Students in ACE Plus Program
The Arizona Council of Hispanic Employment Managers (ACHEM) awarded the $2,500 David A. Perez, Sr. Memorial Scholarship on Aug. 15 to the ACE Plus Program at Glendale Community College. This $2,500 award will cover the fees and books for several ACE Plus students who will be selected by the program director, based on need. David A. Perez was a native Arizonan and decorated Vietnam veteran who went on to serve his country as a civil servant at Luke Air Force Base. He was instrumental in helping Hispanics achieve jobs in government and in the Air Force, and helped them pursue higher education. A member of the ACHEM scholarship committee, herself a former ACE Plus student, recommended ACE Plus to receive the award. The criteria were "promoting higher education and the advancement of skills and abilities of high school students." ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program designed to expose high school students to a college environment and course work, and teach them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. Students take evening and weekend college courses during high school, with tuition waived.
