GCC Hosts Chancellor Search Community Forum Sept. 9
Glendale Community College (GCC) will host a public forum on Tuesday, Sept. 9 to allow the community to meet Acting Chancellor Dr. Rufus Glasper. He is the only candidate to apply through an internal search process being used by the Maricopa Community College District Governing Board to select a new Chancellor. Glasper will answer questions from a panel of citizens and employees; additionally, time will be devoted to questions from community members and employees. The forum will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Union Lounge on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The forum and parking are free and open to the public. 9/11 "Unity Day" Opening Ceremony at GCC
Glendale Community College will host opening ceremonies of Glendale's "Unity Day" at 6:00 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 11. The ceremonies will take place at the Soleri Amphitheater on the west side of the campus, located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The public is invited. Unity Day will honor the second anniversary of 9/11 and is designed to unite people of diverse backgrounds to promote peace and harmony in our community. After the opening ceremonies, dignitaries will process together to Saguaro Ranch Park where the remaining festivities of the evening will take place until 10:00 p.m.: clowns, basketball, magic show, petting zoo, crafts, face painting, art show, drawing contest, Mexican and African American dancing, display booths, music, foods of many ethnic varieties and more.
New Computer Academy for Older Adults at GCC
Active older adults can learn about computers in Glendale Community College's new Computer Academy for Lifelong Learners (CALL). Beginning Sept. 29, CALL courses will present information about computers in a relaxed, informal setting. To kick off the new program, three levels of computer skill-building will be offered as short-term classes. Level One Computer Skills (BPC005) will meet twice for .25 credits, Level Two Computer Skills (BPC100AA) will meet twice for .50 credits, and Level Three Computer Skills (BPC 100AB) will meet twice for .50 credits. Internationally Renowned Author Harlan Ellison at GCC Sept. 10
Author, actor, futurist, raconteur and bon vivant Harlan Ellison will speak at Glendale Community College on Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge. Ellison's fans will recognize him primarily as a writer of science fiction and fantasy. His prodigious work includes 75 books, 1,700 short stories, essays and articles, two dozen teleplays, a dozen movie scripts, and much more. He has lent his voice to several movie voice-over roles and has television roles in science fiction series. Ellison has received literary awards too numerous to list but include the prestigious Hugo (eight times), the Nebula (three times), the Edgar Allan Poe award and many more. This lecture is open and free to the public; there is ample free parking as well. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale.
