GCC Debuts New BioTechnology Course; Prof Selected for National Workshop
The Valley of the Sun is poised to become a major player in the Genomics industry and other biotechnology fields, leading to new jobs for a skilled labor force. Glendale Community College Professor Dr. James Tuohy is planning for this by developing new classes and participating in a nation-wide Biotechnology planning program. One of approximately 30 teachers selected by the national Biotechnology Institute, Tuohy attended the National Biotechnology Teacher-Leader Program at the annual June convention in Washington, D.C. This program supports outstanding teachers with practical biotechnology teaching strategies that they can take back and apply in the classroom. Participants also visited prime biotechnology sites to observe ongoing research and the types of training that employees in the field need.
GCC is debuting its first Biotechnology class this fall, taught by Tuohy, called Biotechnology Seminar: Biomedical Applications (BIO211AA; no pre-requisites required.) This class directly addresses the educational needs of West Valley students interested in the growing biotechnology field, and the ultimate challenge of providing a skilled workforce of laboratory personnel. For more information about this course contact Professor Tuohy (pronounced Too-ey) at
james.tuohy@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3845. To register for the course, call 623-845-3333.
