GCC is Only Community College in U.S. Selected for National Project

Glendale Community College is the only community college--along with 29 universities--selected to participate in this year's national project for Standard Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS). SAILS focuses on the growing need for all students to accurately and quickly access information from a variety of sources. However, there is no national exam or standard to test and measure the ability of students to perform information-gathering skills. To develop such an exam, GCC and other selected institutions will design their own "test of information literacy" and administer it to a student sample to be identified by the college. Kent State University, in conjunction with the Association of Research Libraries, sought and received the grant to administer this nation-wide SAILS project. GCC was one of only two Arizona schools selected for Phase 2 of the SAILS project. Charlotte Cohen, Librarian and GCC's liaison to project SAILS, attended training and orientation in Toronto this summer. Cohen says, "it was a great opportunity for GCC to be selected for this project. It will be fascinating to help design and implement the research. This project will produce a tool that will accurately measure information literacy skills, gather national data, provide norms, and compare information literacy measures with other indicators of student learning." For more information on SAILS, Cohen may be reached at charlotte.cohen@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3106.

GCC Will Receive $100,000 to Develop Advanced Technology Curriculum

As the incredibly fast-paced field of electronics has advanced, community colleges have struggled to keep their curricula up to date. Instructors often lack the time and funding to update and revise curricula. A grant written by MATEC (Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center) has resulted in an award of $900,000 from the National Science Foundation for the Maricopa Community College District to enhance education and training in the field of electronics. $100,000 of that funding will be allocated to Glendale Community College over the next three years. MATEC is a consortium of MCCD personnel and industry specialists who seek funds for community colleges to upgrade engineering/electronics technology education. Participating companies and organizations in the the project include Intel, Texas Instruments, the American Electronics Association, and Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International. GCC Technology Chair Carlos Nuņez and Technology Professors Manny Griego and Ui Luu will manage these funds in the development of high tech curriculum which will focus on electronics, semiconductors, microprocessors, robotics, and other advanced technology development. The money will largely be spent on faculty development of new curriculum and the equipment necessary to teach high tech material. For more information on this project, reach Professor Manny Griego at manny.griego@gcmail.maricopa.edu online.
