Research of GCC Psychology Students Wins National Recognition
Much celebrating has been going on within the Glendale Community College chapter of Psi Beta, the National Community College Honor Society for Psychology Majors. In two recent national competitions, GCC students have achieved amazing recognition. On July 9, Michelle Bonser and Steven Marsh were informed that they had won first ($500) and second ($300) places, respectively, in the national Allyn & Bacon Research Paper Competition. They competed with research submitted from all other Psi Beta chapters in the United States. Bonser's research paper dealt with the speed of human cognition in higher level thinking, and Marsh's dealt with the effects of caffeine on the physical and mental performance of research rats. Their papers will also be presented at the August 2003 American Psychological Convention in Toronto.
At a different conference, eight teams of GCC Psi Beta students had their research projects selected for display at the May 2003 meeting of the Western Psychological Society (WPS). This was a particularly notable achievement since the selected research is usually drawn from projects done by practicing professionals in the field and graduate students. According to GCC Professor of Psychology Dr. Sue Oliver, "it is even rare for university juniors and seniors to have their research projects selected for display at the WPS Convention; to have eight teams of community college students from GCC selected is really unprecedented." Dr. Oliver is a popular instructor and research mentor in the GCC Psychology Department. For further information on this research, you may contact her at

Police Request---and Get--- Special Training at GCC
Since updating skills never ends for police officers, Glendale Community College is teaching a "police officers only" EMT class this summer. At the request of police, the college customized an EMT class to be taught specifically for and to police officers, concentrating on emergency situations that police frequently face and the specifics they need. SWAT officers, meth lab officers, and others are benefiting from this custom training. The three instructors are particularly qualified; not only are they trained in EMT instruction, but all three are current or former police officers, firefighters, fire paramedics, or have filled a combination of these roles. Chris Coughlin, administrator of this program says, "it was a pleasure for GCC to assemble this terrific team to teach this specialized class. We are here to serve community needs and I would welcome calls from other West Valley agencies which are interested in similar training." Coughlin may be reached at
