U.S. PATENT AWARDED TO GCC PROFESSOR'S INVENTION

Major universities are not the only places where cutting-edge research and inventions are born.  Glendale Community College Professor of Technology and Electronics Ui Luu (pronounced "Wee Loo") is the inventor of a medical instrument which will improve millions of people's lives and received a U.S. government patent on July 1, 2003.   Diabetics and others with blood-sugar disorders will someday no longer need to painfully prick their fingers to get blood for a sugar-level test--sometimes several times a day.   Ui Luu's invention is an instrument that can be placed on the arm, which, through an infra-red spectral analysis of the blood flowing beneath the skin, combined with a complex algorithm run by a computer chip, can compute blood sugar levels non-invasively.  According to Luu, "It will most likely be a couple of years before this invention yields a product marketable to the general public.  Hospitals and clinics will buy it first, when product design is complete."   Luu was hired as a research and design consultant by a medical company which will own the patent; his name, however, is on it as the inventor.  He worked more than 3 years on the development of this product.  Contact him at ui.luu@gcmail.maricopa.edu and access his photo at http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/news/images/luu.jpg online.

GIVE BLOOD JULY 21 AND YOU MIGHT WIN AIRLINE TICKETS!

As is typical in the summer months, valley blood supplies are dangerously low.  To help bolster these sagging supplies, United Blood Services (UBS) and Glendale Community College are teaming up on Monday, July 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to host a special blood drive.   The public is invited to take part on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale, where the UBS mobile donation unit will be parked on the central mall.  A big bonus for donors is the fact that their names will be added to a pool of donor names from around the state and someone's name will be drawn to win two American Airlines round-trip tickets to San Francisco.  Appointments to donate are necessary; call Phyllis Sweet at 623-845-3522 to set one up.   Donors must be at least 17  and weigh at least 110 pounds.  If you have additional questions about donating, call Jennifer Torres at UBS, 480-675-5840.

REGISTER NOW FOR FALL CLASSES AT GCC

A sluggish economy often encourages college registration, and that is certainly holding true as students register for fall classes at Glendale Community College.  Fall enrollment is already substantially ahead of registration numbers from last July, and is expected to continue at a brisk pace throughout the summer.  For the best selection and availability of classes, the public is encouraged to register NOW for the fall semester which begins August 23 at the GCC Main campus and the University -College Center on the ASU West campus, and September 2 at the GCC North campus.  Call 623-845-3314 to request fall schedules of classes.
