GCC STUDENTS VOLUNTEER TO "ROCK THE VOTE"
A group of civic-minded Glendale Community College students and alumni will help make it possible for Valley youths to register to vote while they are "rocking" with their favorite performers. As volunteers for "Rock the Vote" (RTV), they will staff voter registration tables at upcoming concerts featuring Vans Warped Tour (July 15), the Dave Matthews Band (July 24), the Dixie Chicks (July 25), and Lollapalooza (August 15). Participating in this project are students Bree Crowe, Brian Kohlenberg, Niki Prendi, and Jacob Romero as well as alumni Nathan Farmer, Kait Greiser-Kaman, and Sharon Steffan. According to Phyllis Sweet, Student Activities Program Advisor, "I am not surprised we had such a terrific student and alumni response to this worthy community service; volunteer spirit is very prominent at GCC." RTV is a leading political organization for young people. It is dedicated to protecting freedom of expression and empowering young people to change their world; one of its major goals is registering young people to vote. GCC STUDENTS GET HEAD START ON MEDICAL CAREERS
Five lucky Glendale Community College students have been selected to attend the University of Arizona's MedStart Program this summer. Antonia Cabral, April Gershaw, Zabdy Montenegro, Tolonia Shivers, and Theresa Tanner were selected by the University of Arizona to receive full scholarships for this on-campus program. MedStart is five weeks of intensive classes and activities designed for students interested in exploring careers in the health professions. Four weeks are spent at U of A and one week at Northern Arizona University. The selected students have completed their junior year in high school and are already participating in the ACE Plus program at GCC, which entails taking credit classes during the summers and after school hours during their last two years of high school. The five ACE Plus students selected for the MedStart program will have the additional experience of living in dorms on a university campus, exploring health careers through a variety of scheduled activities, and taking chemistry and other classes for college credit. During the final week they will participate in a one-week health camp at NAU where they will live in dorms, tour the NAU campus, and participate in health/science activities.
