GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO RECEIVE $100,000 NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT
A grant written by MATEC (Maricopa Advanced Technology Consortium) recently received $900,000 from the National Science Foundation, with $100,000 of that funding allocated to Glendale Community College over the next three years. MATEC is a consortium of MCCD personnel and industry specialists who seek funds for community colleges to upgrade engineering/electronics technology education. GCC Electronics Professor Ui Luu has been chosen to manage these funds in the development of high tech engineering/electronics curriculum which will focus on electronics, semiconductors, microprocessors, robotics, and general technology development. The money will largely be spent on faculty development of new curriculum and the equipment necessary to teach high technology material.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PROGRAM FLOURISHING AT GCC
Attracting students from around the world is not just the province of universities. Glendale Community College actively recruits foreign students, and currently boasts an International Students Program consisting of 115 students from 39 countries. Over the years, 80 different countries have sent students to GCC, greatly contributing to the diversity, variety, and cultural richness the campus enjoys. In 1994, the program started with 27 students; enrollments have increased 426 percent in nine years. Initially, students were largely from Canada, Germany, Sweden and a few other nations. Today Asian countries dominate, with only four of the 39 countries (Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan), accounting for 36 percent of GCC's international students. For more information on the GCC International Students Program, call Ken Bus at 623-845-3136.
REGISTER NOW FOR SECOND SUMMER SESSION AND FALL CLASSES AT GCC
A sluggish economy often encourages college registration, and that is certainly holding true as students register for fall classes at Glendale Community College. Fall headcount is already substantially ahead of registration numbers from last June, and is expected to continue at a brisk pace throughout the summer. For the best selection and availability of classes, the public is encouraged to register NOW for summer session II which starts July 7 at GCC Main, GCC North and University-College Center (UCC) at the ASU West campus. The fall semester begins August 23 at GCC Main and UCC, and September 2 at GCC North. Call 623-845-3314 to request summer and/or fall schedules of classes
