RECORD NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENTER GCC'S ACE PLUS SUMMER PROGRAM
Approximately 500 West Valley high school students are enjoying college classes and events through the summer ACE Plus Program at Glendale Community College. This is the largest ACE Plus entering group ever, according to Ibrahim Naim, Director of Early Outreach Programs. ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program designed to expose high school students to a college environment and course work, and teach them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. This summer those activities will include a parent/student orientation, workshops on how to use the library and the on-line card catalog, field trips to NAU, U of A, and ASU, and an end of semester party. Students will take computing and study skills classes for six college credits. There is also a smaller group of about 50 junior high school students from Dysart Middle School who comprise the Dysart Pre-ACE Summer Academic Enrichment Program. These younger students are taking college classes in personal computing and vocabulary development and will receive three college credits. Tuition and fees are waived for all students accepted into either program. Designed for students who have just completed their sophomore year of high school, ACE Plus provides six hours of college course work over the summer and a total of 24 hours by the time they graduate from high school if they stay in the program and continue to take night or weekend classes during their last two years of high school. The program targets students who are financially challenged or who would be first-generation college attendees in their families.
GCC AND FOOD CITY SEND A MESSAGE ABOUT EDUCATION
In a search for new ways to reach out to prospective students and their families, Glendale Community College is partnering with West Valley Food City grocery stores in a series of educational information fairs. In May outside two Food City stores, GCC representatives set up and staffed tables with bilingual information about higher education and GCC, and gave away hundreds of fliers and other promotional items. On Saturday, June 21 from noon to 4:00 p.m., GCC will staff an outreach table at the Food City at 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Rd. In addition to receiving materials and information, participants will be able to spin a special Food City "tortilla wheel" to win prizes. "We're delighted to work with Food City to let so many people know that GCC offers something for them--that we open doors to positive change through the power of education," says GCC's Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs José Mendoza.
GCC NIGHT BIG BAND WILL ROCK KIERLAND COMMONS PLAZA JUNE 14

The band, featuring singer Dianna Lee, will perform from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the shopping center, which is located at the southwest corner of Kierland Boulevard and Scottsdale Road in north Scottsdale. The band will play in the central courtyard of the shopping center, and the performance is free and open to the public. Bringing lawn chairs is suggested.
