UNIQUE STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE BEAUTIFIES GCC CAMPUS
During the past two semesters, students transformed $700 worth of plants, rock and other material into an extensive xeriscape garden and a turf research project at Glendale Community College. Agribusiness and Urban Horticulture classes collaborated on projects that would have cost approximately $17,000 if done by an outside company. On May 13, a campus ceremony marked the grand opening of this garden and turf center at the GCC Agriculture Building. The project was managed by Agribusiness Program Director Mike Gillispie, who taught the Landscape Construction class that did all the demo, construction, and hardscape preparation. The Ag CAD classes did the landscape designs. The Arid Plant classes selected the plants and planted them in the xeriscape. The Irrigation class students designed and installed the irrigation system, and the Turf class installed all the turf in the Turf Research Center. Approximately 160 students benefited from this integrated learning experience. Students awarded plaques of appreciation to many local businesses which donated masonry, bricks, concrete, turf, and more to the project. Anyone interested in the GCC Agribusiness program can visit www.gc.maricopa.edu or call 623-845-3168.
GCC CHICANO STUDENTS DONATE LITERATURE COLLECTION TO LIBRARY
Approximately 60 books and videos representing Chicano culture, history, and social/political perspectives were recently donated to the Glendale Community College library. This Chicano Resource Collection consists of fiction and nonfiction works, and was made possible by the fund-raising efforts of GCC students who belong to M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán). M.E.Ch.A. was born as a result of the Civil Rights Movement and student activism of the '60s and '70s, and its mission is to promote higher education for Chicano students. Activities of the group involve projects and service that focus on cultural awareness and enrichment, professional and academic development, social support, and campus/community activism. M.E.Ch.A. raised some of the funds through food sales and a dance, and received $1,200 for this project from the GCC Evening Student Government. Final book selections were spearheaded by club member Gabriel Romero, with the assistance of GCC Library Director David M. Rodriguez.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GCC
It pays to do well in high school. During the last month, 291 high school seniors who have applied to Glendale Community College received President's Scholarships from the Maricopa Community College District. These scholarships cover tuition for 15 credits every semester for four semesters, totaling $3,068. This means that 291 applicants, largely from the West Valley, will receive $222,615 if they attend GCC for two years. These scholarships are awarded every year to the top 15% of all graduating high school seniors. GCC students are the beneficiaries of many types of scholarship dollars. Last year's figures, including both private and institutional scholarships, totaled nearly $1.5 million for GCC students.
