NEW "FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE" PROGRAM HELPS FIRST-TIME COLLEGE STUDENTS
A highly personalized and nurturing program for first-time college students is being launched at Glendale Community College for the fall 2003, semester. Designed to remove the fear, confusion, or uncertainty from a student's first semester, the "First-Year Experience" (FYE) program creates a structured environment in which first-year college students receive many benefits designed to promote success in meeting their degree-seeking goals. Research from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (http://www.ccsse.org/news/) and the Student Success Initiatives shows that first-time college students who participate in Learning Communities complete the semester successfully at a higher rate than students who simply attend college and take classes at random. FYE is a Learning Community composed of small groups of students who are nurtured through their first semester or first year of college with pre-set blocks of classes, comprehensive orientations, personal meetings with instructors, and personal or group mentoring. Block classes will have integrated/related assignments and FYE students will stay together in these classes throughout the semester. A special "meet-your-teachers party" and campus tour will be held before classes begin in August. Students must apply to be selected for GCC's FYE program which will be limited for the fall semester to 48 students. Applicants must be certificate or degree-seeking, new to Glendale Community College, and score at college levels on English and Reading tests given at GCC. To receive an application packet, call the GCC Counseling Department at 623-845-3064 or visit the department on campus at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. Slots for this popular program are expected to be filled by mid-to-late May, so call or visit soon.

FREE PHOENIX SYMPHONY SINFONIETTA CONCERT AT GCC APRIL 23
Glendale Community College will host a free afternoon concert of classical music performed by the Phoenix Symphony Sinfonietta on Wednesday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m. Serving the greater Phoenix area, the Sinfonietta presents a special musical experience as part of the Symphony's educational partnership with the Maricopa Community College District. This all-string chamber ensemble explores various musical topics as well as the instruments of the string family. Interactive by nature, each performance includes an opportunity for the audience to get "up-close-and-personal" by asking questions of the symphony musicians.
