ACCLAIM FOR INNOVATIVE LEARNING AT GCC
Dr. René Díaz-Lefebvre, Psychology Faculty at Glendale Community College, is fast becoming internationally known for his ground-breaking work applying the cognitive psychology theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) to the development of innovative ways to help college students learn. This approach to learning focuses on students quite literally "learning how to learn" by expressing themselves and cooperating with others in creative ways that supplement traditional reading, writing and speaking. The program, "Multiple Intelligences/Learning for Understanding" (MI/LfU), has received a great deal of national attention in recent months. Díaz-Lefebvre and other GCC faculty have presented numerous papers at conferences in the U.S., most recently in Honolulu and Phoenix, with Chicago scheduled for later this month. These presentations have also brought the program international attention; Díaz-Lefebvre's upcoming presentations on the MI/LfU program will take him to Costa Rica, Africa, and China. GCC is hosting an MI/LfU High School Institute at GCC this fall and is developing a web site with details. Watch for further information on the development of this exciting program on teaching, learning and creative assessment being pioneered at GCC. Díaz-Lefebvre can be reached at

GCC XERISCAPE CLASS TO BE TAUGHT BY TEMPE WATER SPECIALIST APRIL 12
Anyone who wants a yard that is attractive, low-maintenance, water-conserving and economical should register for the upcoming one-day Xeriscape Landscaping Workshop presented by the Community Ed Department at Glendale Community College. Taught by Richard Bond, it will be held on the GCC campus at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale, on Saturday, April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Student Union Conference Room 110. Topics to be covered include design, use of low-water plants, planning for energy conservation and low maintenance, irrigation systems and techniques, use of limited turf areas, and inorganic mulches. Students will also take a field trip to the nearby Glendale Public Library to study its xeriscape landscaping created and installed by Bond, and are asked to bring a lunch. Bond is a GCC graduate who earned an AAS degree in Ornamental Horticulture in 1996 and later a B.S. in Plant Biology from ASU. Currently he is Water Conservation Specialist for the City of Tempe Water Utilities Department, a Certified Arborist and a Certified Arizona Nurseryman. Delighted to be teaching at his Alma Mater, Bond said, "My time at GCC was very enjoyable, affordable and convenient. I was working full-time in the landscape industry at the time, which made evening horticulture classes at GCC a natural place to start. Receiving my AAS from GCC also made my transfer to ASU much more cost effective." GCC currently offers an Agribusiness Program with five specialization tracks. Course fee is $35; to register (NC500 0272), call GCC phone registration at 623-845-3333.
