GCC Again Named Military Friendly School

Glendale Community College is again on Victory Media's Military Friendly Schools list, which honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to ensure the higher education success of America's military service members, veterans and their families.

"I am pleased with our efforts in serving veterans and their dependents," says GCC Vice President and Provost Ron Natale. "Our Veteran Services Center has become a beacon for our students with military experience to find assistance designed specifically for their needs as well as to gather and relax in camaraderie."

The VSC provides veterans and their family members assistance including applying for benefits, financial aid, counseling and advising as well as resources in health care, employment counseling, training and family support. Additional connections include partnerships with veterans' groups and community-based service organizations to provide benefits; vocational rehabilitation; life insurance; PTSD and TBI assistance; suicide prevention; reintegration counseling; and vocational training. The VSC offers, at no cost, use of computers including privacy screen technology and a lounge where individuals and families with children can relax while seeking assistance. Also, the Arizona VFW donated computer systems so that friends and families of those serving overseas can gather for private, one-on-one Skype video/audio communications.

The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's Military Friendly Schools list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools are making the grade by offering scholarships and discounts, veterans clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those who served. Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list was compiled through extensive research and data-driven surveys of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The website, www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans with their education decisions.

GCC's Veteran Services Center is located just north of the Student Union on the college's main campus at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Contact www.gccaz.edu/va or 623-845-3363.
