A Goodyear couple with Vietnamese backgrounds who desire to "give back to the community" have funded a scholarship to benefit up to four Vietnamese students each year – two each semester – in their studies at Glendale Community College (GCC).
Dr. Dat Tran and his wife, Antoria Doan, have funded the scholarship that will award $4,000 to benefit up to four deserving Vietnamese students who have earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at GCC and have maintained a grade-point average of at least 3.0. The award will begin during the spring 2010 semester.
Applicants will be required to submit a written essay titled, "Why I need support to meet my educational goals."
Doan, a GCC alumna, said the scholarships are being awarded as a result of the couple's desire to "give back to the community" and help to support others.
"We believe in education and want to give back to the community by lending helping hands to Vietnamese students who are determined to complete their college education," Doan said. "We want the students to share our vision in helping others, being role models and, most importantly, achieving higher education to better our community and our country."
Doan is director of operations for Multi-Specialty Physicians, a division of Integrated Medical Services (IMS), a medical-services provider. Her husband, Dr. Tran, is a board-certified internist who serves as hospitalist division chair for Multi-Specialty Physicians and works out of offices in Sun City and Surprise.
Additionally, Dr. Tran is a board director for Arizona State Physicians Association, an adjunct professor at Midwestern University in Glendale and clinical professor for Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He earned his bachelor of science degree in biology at the University of California at Irvine and his medical training at the Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. He also attended the University of Phoenix for his master in business administration in health care management.
The Vietnamese Scholarship Fund is deposited with the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation. Questions about the award can be directed to Judy Sanchez, director of development and alumni relations, at judy.sanchez@gcmail.maricopa.edu or call 623.845.3481.
