Often affecting veterans, public-safety officers and others, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety condition that occurs after an individual experiences a traumatic event involving the threat of injury or death.

"Everyday with PTSD" will be discussed at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Room 104 of the Student Union on Glendale Community College's (GCC's) main campus at 59th and West Olive avenues. The presentation by Brooks Gibson, a licensed professional counselor with Arrowhead Counseling Services of Phoenix, concludes a series of "brown bag" presentations on "Real-Life Applications of Psychology."

Gibson also will delve into the relationships between PTSD and sexual abuse.

In his practice, Gibson performs outpatient counseling, assessment and mediation. He also works with the family court as a custody evaluator, parenting coordinator and therapeutic interventionist. He is a member of the Arizona Supreme Court committee that is rewriting the 2001 Arizona Parenting Plan's manual used by family courts in Arizona. Additionally, he serves on the Mental Health Committee of the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Gibson earned his master of education degree from Northern Arizona University and is pursuing his doctorate in clinical psychology from Capella University.

The three-part series at GCC began in September with a presentation by Dr. Leslie Baxter, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist with Barrow Neurological Institute, who studies the effects of neurological disease on brain functioning. In October, Dr. Bart Lerner, campus president of Argosy University/Phoenix, discussed opportunities in the developing field of sport psychology.
