"Fifty Years in Clay and Still Going!"
A reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in Room 104 of the Student Union at Glendale Community College (GCC) opens a month-long exhibition of clay media created by the hands of 20-year GCC instructor Dr. Harry Kaino III, who has been creating clay pieces for more than half a century. The Student Union is located near the center of GCC's main campus at 59th and West Olive avenues in Glendale.
The exhibition – titled "Fifty Years in Clay and Still Going!" – is the last in a series of three fall art shows sponsored at the college by the GCC Associated Student Government. Previous shows have featured oil and watercolor presentations by Phoenix artist Julie Gilbert Pollard and mixed-media art by GCC faculty member Gaylen Stewart, whose show closes Oct. 28.
Rather than being a retrospective of his work, the show is a viewing of Dr. Kaino's ongoing, more recent art during the past few years. He said he views art as a continual extension of a moment in time, and each moment presents new challenges that are reflected in his artistic creations.
Additionally, Dr. Kaino explained three-dimensional art such as works of clay should be viewed from all angles in order for viewers to appreciate all aspects.
Dr. Kaino earned as associate degree from El Camino College, Torrance, Calif., a bachelor of arts degree in art from Long Beach State University in California, and both his master of fine arts degree in ceramics and doctorate in art education from Arizona State University. He has been teaching for 40 years, including the last 20 at GCC.
The exhibition of Dr. Kaino's work continues through Thursday, Dec. 3.
GCC is one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges and offers associate degrees and certificate programs that last year attracted almost 30,000 students to GCC's main campus in Glendale and the GCC North campus, 5727 W. Happy Valley Road, Phoenix.
