Dr. Bart Lerner, campus president, Argosy University/Phoenix, will discuss "Current Opportunities in the Field of Sport Psychology: How the Field Has Developed" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Room 104 of the Student Union on Glendale Community College's (GCC's) main campus at 59th and West Olive avenues.

His talk is a continuation of a series of "brown bag" presentations on "Real-Life Applications of Psychology" being presented this fall at Glendale Community College (GCC).

Named as campus president in February 2008, Dr. Lerner served in various roles at Argosy University/Phoenix including assistant professor in the Sport-Exercise Psychology program, chair of the Mental Health Counseling program and chair of the Forensic Psychology program. He served as associate dean for the Arizona School of Professional Psychology and later became vice president of academic affairs.

Prior to joining the university's faculty, Dr. Lerner worked in the counseling center at The Citadel. He has taught courses in statistics and the exercise sciences, including exercise physiology, motor learning and development, and sports medicine and rehabilitation. Additionally, he has taught counseling-related courses such as counseling skills, life-span development, athletic counseling and substance abuse.

Dr. Lerner is a licensed professional counselor in Arizona and a certified consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. His many areas of interest include youth sport education; performance-enhancement training, which includes goal setting, imagery, dealing with performance anxiety; self-confidence; psychological aspects of injury and rehabilitation; substance-abuse issues; supervision and training; and graduate training in sport psychology.

His experience includes working with youth, high school, college and professional athletes in the field of sport psychology.

Dr. Lerner, who is co-author of the book Training Professionals in the Practice of Sport Psychology, earned a doctoral degree in sport behavior, master's degrees in kinesiology and counseling, and an undergraduate degree in psychology.

His presentation is the second in a series of three lectures on the applications of psychology. The series began in September with a presentation by Dr. Leslie Baxter, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist with Barrow Neurological Institute, who studies the effects of neurological disease on brain functioning.

The final presentation in the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, when Brooks Gibson, a licensed professional counselor with Arrowhead Counseling Services, examines "Everyday with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)."
