"Organic Gardening," a one-credit course designed to teach individuals how to grow vegetables naturally and maximize nutritional value, will begin Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, in Room 119 of the Math Building at Glendale Community College (GCC). The Math building is located near the center of GCC's main campus at 59th and West Olive avenues.
Class times are from 5:30 to 9:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 6, 20 and 27. No previous gardening experience is necessary.
Instructor Jeffrey Schiller, who has been gardening for more than 30 years and written for various national gardening magazines, says students will learn how to start an organic vegetable garden. Topics will include choosing seeds, vegetable-planting times, making and using compost, soil amendments, fertilizers and more.
"We will cover how to change our soil condition and successfully grow a garden in Arizona using organic materials," Schiller says. He adds this is the first time GCC has offered the course. Considering organic gardening's increasing popularity, he notes, "The time is right for this."
Registration for the class can be completed by going to http://My.maricopa.edu and clicking on "Find a Class." In the Keywords/Course number, type in "organic gardening," and check "Fall 2009" under Semester and "Glendale" under the Colleges before clicking "Search." The course number is WED 195AB, Section 65420. Regular course fees apply. Enrollment also can be accomplished by calling 623.845.3333.
