A licensed clinical neuropsychologist with Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) will deliver the first in a series of three "brown bag" presentations on "Real-Life Applications of Psychology" to be presented this fall at Glendale Community College (GCC).

The free sessions, each lasting just more than one hour, are open to students, faculty and the public and will be presented in Room 104 of the GCC Student Union. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave., and the Student Union is located near the center of the campus.

Leading off the series will be Dr. Leslie Baxter, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist who studies the effects of neurological disease on brain functioning. Her presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, will address "The Brain Behavior Relationship: Using Neuropsychology and Functional MRI in Neurological Patients." Dr. Baxter studies the effects of neurological disease on brain functioning and has a main focus on changes that occur during both normal and abnormal aging. She particularly is interested in aging in women, including memory changes that occur during the menopausal transition.

Dr. Baxter is BNI's principal investigator for the Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Core Center, a collaboration of leading research organizations for the study of Alzheimer's. She also is a founding member of the Phoenix Caregiver Cooperative Group, a multi-institutional group dedicated to improving the health of those caring for their loved ones with dementia.

In addition to Dr. Baxter, following are additional presentations in the series:

•7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 – Dr. Bart Lerner, campus president, Argosy University/Phoenix, will discuss "Current Opportunities in the Field of Sport Psychology: How the Field Has Developed."

•1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 – Brooks Gibson, a licensed professional counselor with Arrowhead Counseling Services, will explore "Everyday with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)."
