New $25,000 Scholarship for GCC Graduate Athletes

Glendale Community College has received its first scholarship designed to help GCC graduate athletes continue their education at a four-year college or university! Long-time GCC supporters Leland and Nancy Stanley of Wickenburg, AZ, recently endowed a GCC scholarship in their names. The Stanleys have been supportive and enthusiastic friends of the city of Glendale and GCC for many years. Though GCC did not exist when the Stanleys began college at Phoenix College, both of their daughters did attend GCC.
The Stanleys lived in Glendale for 35 years and enjoyed attending GCC athletic and cultural events regularly. Leland Stanley was Director of Glendale Parks and Recreation for 27 years, and worked on projects with the college, including building the swimming pool and constructing the road between the college and Sahuaro Ranch Park. He was in the same Rotary Club as former GCC Executive Dean Matt Hanhila and former GCC President John Waltrip, both of whom became his friends.
Recipients of the Leland and Nancy Stanley Scholarship must be university-bound graduates of GCC who have participated in a GCC athletic program within the last three years. The Stanleys believe that students who graduate from GCC, having also participated in athletics, show dedication, perseverance, completion of goals, and good physical fitness. They also believe in the importance of "learning to be a team player in life," and in the wisdom of athletes finishing their education in addition to pursuing possible careers in athletics. Leland and Nancy Stanley were happy to be able to turn their long friendship and association with GCC into this new endowed scholarship for athletes.
