Did you know that thirty new, previously unknown diseases have broken out worldwide just in the last two decades, adding to the huge list of diseases humans already suffer from? If you are concerned and would like to know more, Glendale Community College will host a a free showing of the PBS documentary Hot Zones on Friday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. in the GCC Student Union, room SU-104E. This film is the sixth episode of a ten-part series, Journey to Planet Earth.

As stated on the Journey to Planet Earth website: " Hot Zones shows just how closely human health is dependent on that of the environment. The film examines the human consequences of altering global and local ecosystems. In this program, we visit Kenya, Peru, Bangladesh and the United States, where changing climates, uncontrolled development and loss of natural habitat have led to an increase in infectious diseases. We also explore how cutting edge use of remote sensing data and new epidemiology studies are assisting health and ecosystem scientists predict and ultimately control serious epidemics." Hot Zones thoroughly documents the advent of many diseases, and the solutions being pursued.
