As Veterans' Day approaches, if there is a veteran you would like to honor in a very special way, Glendale Community College offers you a unique giving opportunity. Two years ago, a new student scholarship, called the GCC Veterans Spirit of National Service Scholarship was established to help any veteran or relatives of disabled veterans attend college at GCC.
GCC Dean Charles Jeffery started this endowed scholarship by giving both the initial gift and subsequent contributions. The earnings from the principal will produce awards every year. Jeffery hopes to see this scholarship grow even more over time and all are invited to make a donation. Anyone can contribute any amount at any time to this scholarship fund, in honor of a specific veteran(s) or for any other reason.
Jeffery is a retired U.S. Army officer who himself benefited from the Vietnam-era GI Bill, and believes this type of program is essential to assist today's returning veterans as they transition from military to civilian careers. The scholarship is open to any student who has served in the Armed Forces or any dependent of a service member who was killed or disabled during their period of service in any branch of the military.
Interested parties can also consider starting their own endowed scholarships. An endowment is $10,000 or more, and funds scholarship award(s) in perpetuity, awarding only the earnings each year. Donors can begin an endowed scholarship by giving a smaller amount and inviting their friends to donate to it as well. The money will grow over time until the scholarship is large enough to generate awards each year. The larger the endowment grows, the more students who can be helped each year.
