Nationally known artist and Glendale Community College professor Sharon Ely Forsmo will display her colorful paintings in a free exhibit at the college from Monday, Oct. 6 through Thursday, Oct. 30. The paintings, taken from "urban slices of life" according to Forsmo, will be shown in the GCC Student Union, room SU-104. From 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, there will be a "meet the artist" opening-night reception in SU-104. Light refreshments will be served.

Forsmo earned a BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona and an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has taught at GCC since 1992. She studied history of the early Italian Renaissance in Florence, Italy, and has been deeply involved in researching the history of pigment. Her paintings focus on color in a contemporary realist style, and have been exhibited in local and national juried shows, most recently at a national juried exhibition at the Attleboro Arts Museum in Massachusetts.

"My work has always utilized color to define and articulate a response to the things I encounter on a a regular basis, be they urban slices of life or bridal dresses in a shop window," says Forsmo. "I'm most interested in color and its relationship to light, surface pattern and texture."

GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. The Student Union is located on the south side of the campus off Olive Ave. at Glendale Community College Ave. The Student Union is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.
