Glendale Community College invites the community to attend several free events in honor and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
On Thursday, Sept. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. in the GCC Student Union, bring your lunch and enjoy a film titled The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon, produced by renowned documentary film maker John Carlos Frey. It tells the story of "invisible" day workers workers from Mexico and Central America who toil in San Diego, living outdoors in the city's canyons and drinking water from streams polluted with runoff from nearby housing developments. They have no medical care and no means to "defend" themselves if someone decides not to pay them for a day's work. See how they live and how they have tried to create communities in the canyons. Hear their stories and make your own decisions about the need for workers and the continued immigration debate.
On Tuesday, Sept. 30, from noon-1 p.m. in the GCC Student Union, bring your lunch or enjoy the Palm's café and listen to an hour of fun and lively mariachi music performed by the Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix, a group affiliated with ASU. Mariachi music is a part of the curriculum at ASU and this group performs throughout the Valley. Most if its members are instructors and students who proudly demonstrate the unique and distinctive music that has made mariachi music so loved in the American southwest. This music will get you up on your feet!!
On Wednesday, Oct. 15, from noon to 1 p.m. in the GCC Student Union, bring your lunch and enjoy a presentation by James E. Garcia, a journalist, playwright and ASU researcher and instructor. He teaches writing and ethnic studies at ASU and is the founder and producing artistic director of New Carpa Theater, a phoenix-based theater company that focuses on multicultural and Latino-themed works. He will discuss his work, activities and projects in both arenas. As a journalist, Mr. Garcia has appeared on National Public Radio, CNN and MSNBC. He is the co-author of the soon-to-be-published book Raul Yzaguirre: A Life in Civil Rights.
For more information about any of these programs, call 623.845.3079 or 623.845.3354.
GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. The Student Union is on the south side of the campus, off of Olive at 61st Ave. (Glendale Community College Drive). Parking is free.
