Did you know that there more than 1,000 animal species endangered worldwide–496 in the U.S. and 39 in Arizona alone? If you are concerned and would like to know more, Glendale Community College will host a free showing of the film State of the Planet's Wildlife on Friday, Sept. 26, at 1:00 p.m. in the Mathematics Building, room MA-142.
The GCC "Green Efforts" Committee; the GCC Environmental Club; and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Club (S.T.E.M.) are co-sponsoring this hour-long film. It is the ninth episode of a ten-part PBS series, Journey to Planet Earth, and deals with threatened and endangered animals. Each of the PBS episodes dealt with a critical environmental issue facing the Earth. There will be a question and answer period after the film.
Scientists estimate that just under 150 billion species of plants and animals have at one time lived on planet earth. 99.99% of them are extinct, and there are about 1.5 million living now. Many of those extinctions occurred naturally before humans even appeared, but extinctions are occurring at a faster rate now, thanks to man and his pollution, hunting, and massive habitat destruction. Humankind cannot afford this rate of extinction–who knows what plant the next "miracle drug" might come from–if it's still here to be discovered!
One way to start "helping" endangered species is to become informed about the problems. Come join GCC students and faculty in viewing this enlightening film about the plight of the earth's wildlife. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Free parking is available.
