GCC is "Growing" Pitchers for Major League Baseball

July 14, 2008

The 2008 major league baseball draft of July 13 saw two Glendale Community College pitchers picked by National League teams. Brent Klinger and Chase Lehr, both right-handed pitchers, contributed to the GCC Gaucho's winning season this year (35-22).

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked GCC pitcher Brent Klinger in the 21st round of the draft. He came from Greenway High School and played at GCC for two years. "Klinger is a big guy, six feet four inches, and is a power pitcher," said GCC Athletic Director Dave Grant. "He was scouted this year by the Pirates and many other major league baseball teams as well."

Another GCC pitcher, right-hander Chase Lehr, was drafted by the Houston Astros. Lehr went to Centennial High School and transferred to GCC from Yavapai Community College after his freshman season. He was picked in the 49th round of the draft and has been assigned to the Tri-City Valley Cats, a minor A-league affiliate team of the Astros based in Troy, New York..
