GCC International Student Takes 2nd Place in National Judo Competition

June 4, 2008

Glendale Community College student Alexander Malinovskiy, age 20, recently took second place in the the Men's 90 Kilogram weight class (198.4 pounds) at the recent USA Judo national competition in Denver, Colorado. A native of Russia, Malinovskiy is an international student at the college and has completed one year of study. Nicknamed "Sasha" and well-liked by other students, he is taking English as a Second Language classes and has excelled at learning the language. He lives in Glendale and walks to GCC.

Malinovskiy is one of 135 international students at GCC this year, representing 45 foreign countries. There have only been a handful of Russian students in all the years the program has existed. International Education Program Director Ken Bus says, "It has been quite a while since we had a student from Russia. We are happy to see interest in GCC from that country, and hope to have many more students like 'Sasha' who is a wonderfully friendly and enthusiastic young man."

Judo was the fighting system of feudal Japan. Translated as the "gentle way", Judo uses flexibility, balance, timing and leverage in the performance of Judo throws and other skills. Technique, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo.
