Low-Cost Internship Class at GCC Can Open Doors to Jobs
More than 600 potential employers offer internships to Glendale Community College students through the Career Work Experience (CWE) class now accepting registrations. The cost for these pathways to employment can be as low as $65 a semester. Instructor Diane Taylor matches students to real-world internship experiences that open career possibilities. The class helps those of any age who are eager to acquire new skills, undecided about their career goals, or unable to find employment without experience. There is also an "open-entry, self-paced" (OE/SP) section in which students can enroll at any time during a semester, not just at the beginning, and proceed at their own pace. The class meets on campus, 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale, four times to cover résumé writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies, and how to get an internship. Internships can provide valuable job experience in numerous areas–computers, accounting, marketing, engineering, social work, health care, graphic arts, broadcasting and more. Internships can provide up to three credits. According to Taylor, "the CWE class has provided job experience and opened career possibilities for numerous students, and has saved many others from spending time and money in fields they discovered were not for them." Call 623.845.3333 to register for the CWE class. Ceremony at GCC North "Tops Out" New Buildings

Following a long-standing construction custom, Glendale Community College officials and other community leaders gathered at the GCC North site on Jan. 8 for a "topping out" of the buildings in phase one of new permanent construction. The topping out ceremony celebrates the placement of the highest beam for the structure, or in this case, a group of structures. Workers and participants sign the beam and attach a small evergreen, which signifies well wishes for the building and its future inhabitants. The beam is then lifted into place. The new buildings going up at GCC North will provide an additional 68,000 square feet and four new buildings: a central plant, an instruction building, a student services building and an information building. The project also includes additional parking and a remodel of existing facilities that house classroom and administration. The expansion of the site will provide science labs, general purpose and computer classrooms, a student union and lounge, student life offices, food service, library, fitness center, bookstore, community room and offices for faculty and staff. The new buildings are scheduled to be open for the fall 2008 semester. GCC North is located at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road in Glendale.
