MLK Tribute and Breakfast to be Held at GCC, Jan. 15
The 14th annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., co-sponsored this year by the event's founding Northwest Black History Committee (NBHC) and Glendale Community College (GCC), will be held at the GCC Campus on Tues., Jan. 15, in the Student Union, room 104. Doors open at 6:45 a.m. and the program, including breakfast, begins at 7:00 a.m.
The event's keynote speaker will be Elder Jonathan Logan, Pastor of the Antioch Church of God in Christ in Peoria.
The program will also include the presentation of the 2008 Judge Jean Williams award to Bishop Alexis Thomas of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church (PRBC). Preaching since age seven, beginning his formal preaching career at age 16, and named ninth pastor of PRBC in 1984 at age 17, Thomas's church has become an enormous and renowned presence in central Phoenix. The Honorable Judge Jean Williams will present the award, named in her honor.
Judge Williams will also donate and present the first contribution to "seed" the new Ervin Cutwright Student Scholarship. It is being established to honor Ervin Cutwright, the founder of the NBHC, which is dedicated to education and awareness of Black history and culture in the Northwest Valley.
The public is invited to attend this annual NBHC signature event. Single tickets are $35; a private table for eight is $400. Call 623.204.0959 to purchase tickets or for more information. All proceeds go to the NBHC and Youth Programs.
