Two Former GCC Students Win National Awards for Creative Writing

Students of all ages thrive at Glendale Community College, and two former non-traditional students recently won awards in a nation-wide writing contest. This time last year, two GCC students were enjoying creative writing classes. Frances Thomas, 59, of Sun City was taking "Creative Writing" and John Haaheim, 62, of Sun City West was enjoying a similar class. Both students entered a regional writing competition sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College. Thomas submitted a poem, "Silence Dark and Deep," and Haaheim entered his essay "The Goose." Both won first place prizes and, months later, their works were submitted in the 2006-2007 national writing contest, also sponsored by the League for Innovation. Recently, Thomas, Haaheim and GCC were notified that Thomas's poem had taken third place nationally in the poetry category and Haaheim's essay had taken third place in the essay category. Thomas's poem recounted a true and terrifying night she experienced while driving her car through a horrible storm. Haaheim's essay was a slightly fictionalized account of the death of an eccentric friend from his high school military academy days. Thomas and Haaheim have both taken several classes at GCC and plan to do so again. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Visit www.gccaz.edu for information.
