GCC Offers Classes in Surprise for the First Time
If you live in the Northwest Valley and want to take college Biology, Algebra, Psychology or English this fall, you'll be happy to know there is a new extension program from Glendale Community College. Classes will be held at Valley Vista High School, 15550 W. Parkview Place, in Surprise. Starting with six classes in August, the site is expected to grow and offer more classes every semester. Specifically, for fall semester, the site will offer BIO156, Introductory Biology for Allied Health; MAT092, Introductory Algebra; MAT121, Intermediate Algebra; PSY101, Introduction to Psychology; and ENG101 and 102, First Year Composition. All classes begin at 5:00 p.m. or later and meet two evenings a week. The GCC Main campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue and GCC North at 5727 W. Mark Your Calendars for Huge West Valley Career Expo, Oct. 6
A consortium of West Valley educational institutions and businesses will sponsor a mammoth Career and Technical Education Career Expo Sat., Oct. 6, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium, at 1 Cardinals Way, Glendale, which can be reached by taking the Glendale Avenue exit off the 101 South and traveling east. The Expo is free, open to the public and offers ample free parking. Students, parents and community members will learn about job opportunities and the skills needed for career success. More than 220 exhibitors representing educational institutions, business, industry and community organizations will present information. Activities will include education and employer information booths, demonstrations and presentations. Some exhibitors will conduct preliminary interviews on site. GCC Psychology Honor Students Win National Research Competition
Matthew D. Anderson and Mary Beth Shea, students at Glendale Community College and members of the Psychology Honor Society Psi Beta, recently wrote research papers that were selected for a national award from the Psi Beta National Honor Society in Psychology for Community Colleges and Allyn and Bacon Publishers. At the August 2007 American Psychological Association national convention in San Francisco, Anderson and Shea will receive certificates of recognition and monetary awards—$500 for Anderson and $300 for Shea. Anderson's winning paper is titled "Hoodia on the Maze Performance of Long-Evans Rats." Shea's is "Ethanol and Caffeine on Aggressive Behavior in Male Long-Evans Rats."
