GCC Prof. Participates in Dig on the Upper Nile
In an effort to help discover and preserve antiquities soon to be lost through flooding, Glendale Community College archaeology professor Dr. Linda Smith spent February and March on a dig in the Sudan, north Africa. She participated in an ASU/UC Santa Barbara joint archaeological project, which was one of several near the third and fourth cataracts (steep rapids or waterfalls) of the Nile River. The Sudanese government is building the Merowe dam at the fourth cataract, which will flood many remains of Nubian civilization, from the Neolithic through the early Christian time periods, including the civilization known as "Kush" by the Egyptians. Nubia was an ancient region of northeastern Africa (southern Egypt and northern Sudan) on the Nile; much of Nubia is now under Lake Nasser. Archaeologists are attempting to recover as much evidence of these civilizations as possible before they are lost forever. Smith was on the ASU team, which focused on excavating burial
tumuli
(mounds) from different time periods. Her team recovered several bodies partially preserved by natural desiccation (drying out) in the sand rather than by intentional mummification processes.
GCC Faculty Member to be Honored by Ronald McDonald House Charities
For her commitment to education, innovation and leadership in the Arizona academic community, Glendale Community College counselor and faculty member Dr. Louise Jones has been selected for the 2007 "Excellence in Teaching" award by Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). She will be honored at the RMHC National Scholarship Breakfast, Friday, September 21 at the Squaw Peak Hilton Resort. Dr. Jones has taught and counseled students at GCC since 1981. She earned a bachelors degree, two masters degrees, and a doctorate. Prior to arriving at GCC, she taught elementary school and worked as a counselor for the Phoenix Urban League. She serves on numerous college committees and in many community service roles. She also founded the Arizona Chapter of the Wilberforce University Alumni Association, which she currently serves as president.
GCC Student Selected for Prestigious Exchange Program
Germany, here she comes! Leaving in late July, Glendale Community College student Elizabeth Laura Tendick of Glendale, 18, will spend the 2007-2008 academic year in Germany, having been selected to participate in a one-year internship in Bonn, through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. This is a scholarship program with a strong emphasis on cultural exchange that is designed to give participants understanding for everyday life, education, and professional training. Tendick will receive two months of intensive German language training, four months of classroom instruction at a German University or College of Applied Sciences, and a five-month internship in her career field. Each year, 75 German students come to the U.S. and 75 U.S. students go to Germany. More than 500 U.S. students competed for the 75 slots. The exchange program conveys the importance of common values, mutual acceptance and lasting personal relationships. Since its inception in 1983, 15,000 young people have participated in the program, staying with families in the host country.
