GCC Philosophy/Religious Studies Department Offers New Classes for Fall
If religions of the world or the history and philosophy of sexuality interest you, you may want to register for one of three new classes offered by the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department at Glendale Community College. Beginning this fall, "Religion in the Modern World," (REL205) "Introduction to Islam," (REL212) and the "Philosophy of Sexuality" (PHI218) will be offered for the first time. "Religion in the Modern World" is an introduction to the nature and role of religious beliefs and practices in shaping the lives of individuals and societies with emphasis on the modern world. A one-semester, college-level English class is the only prerequisite. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for 16 weeks staring Aug. 21. "Introduction to Islam" discusses the history, scriptures, practices and impact of Islam at a beginning level. It meets on Wednesday nights from 7:10 p.m. to 9:55 p.m. for 16 weeks beginning Aug. 22. There are no prerequisites for this class or for the "Philosophy of Sexuality" which examines sexuality in human life, including a historical and critical survey of philosophical and theological views. The class will compare and evaluate contemporary theories about the nature of sexual desire and sexual acts and the implications for contemporary moral problems. Participants must be 18 or older. This class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for 16 weeks, beginning Aug. 21. Each course carries three college credits; tuition and fees total $210 for each course. GCC Women's Basketball Tournament Invites Arizona High School Teams
To raise funds for its women's basketball team, a Summer Basketball Classic Tournament will be sponsored by Glendale Community College, Friday through Sunday, July 13-15. High school teams from around Arizona are invited to register for the tournament that will be held at Raymond S. Kellis High School, 8990 W. Orangewood Avenue in Glendale. The team entry fee is $400. Spectator admission to the tournament is $3 for a single game or $5.00 for an all-day pass. A pool play format will be followed, with each team guaranteed a minimum of five games. GCC Offers Basic Motorcycle Course
The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's introductory riding course. It is paced for beginners and satisfies the state requirements to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license. Several three-day sessions of the BRC will be offered at Glendale Community College during July and August. The class requires approximately five hours of classroom and 11 hours of on-range riding time, spread over a three-day format. Class meets for classroom instruction on Friday evenings from 5:30-9:00 p.m. and Saturday afternoon from 12:30-4:00 p.m. Motorcycles rides will be scheduled Saturday and Sunday mornings; students must be flexible with start and end class times. Sessions are offered the weekends of July 6-8; July 20-22; August 3-5; and August 17-19. The course is intended for new riders who have never been on a motorcycle, have some experience but no training, or want to refresh their basic riding skills A motorcycle, gloves and helmet will be provided to students for use during the course. Upon successful completion of the BRC, students will be issued a certificate that allows them to obtain the motorcycle endorsement on their driver's license and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course Completion Card.
