Black History Month Events in February at GCC (Updated info. since last release on this topic)

Art displays, presentations, and a free "make-a-bracelet" workshop will celebrate African American culture at Glendale Community College during February's Black History Month. All events are free and open to the public. Parking is also free. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Call 623.845.4474 for more information.

Arizona State Senator Leah Landrum-Taylor of District 16 will speak on "African Americans in Politics," Tues., Feb. 20, 10:00 a.m., in the GCC Administration Building, room A-146.

The Glendale Bead Museum will display African art and host a free bracelet-making workshop with beads of African design, Tues., Feb. 20, 11:00 a.m., in the GCC Student Union.

"Chicken Soup for the African-American Soul," will be presented by popular speaker Bari-Ellen Ross, local author and editor/contributor to the popular book Chicken Soup for the African American Soul, Wed., Feb. 21, 11:00 a.m., in the GCC Student Union, room SU-100.

350 students Compete in Science Olympiad at GCC, Mar. 3

Watch egg-carrying vehicles, remote-controlled robots and model airplanes compete at Glendale Community College on Sat., Mar. 3, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., during the 2007 Science Olympiad. More than 350 high school students from 19 high schools statewide will participate. Many events are free and open to the public. Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing student interest in science, and recognizing science achievements of students and teachers. Olympiad events are rigorous interscholastic competitions for which student teams prepare during the year. Awards will be given in the GCC Student Union at 4:30 p.m. SRP is the Gold sponsor of this event. Other sponsors include the Phelps Dodge Foundation, Intel, and Western Area Power Administration. More Than 120 Employers at Free GCC Career Expo, March 28

If you are job hunting, career seeking, or changing careers, plan to attend the free, annual Career Expo at Glendale Community College. On Wed., March 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., more than 120 public and private employers will share valuable information about job and educational opportunities. The public will have direct access to employers seeking talent. Many employers will discuss employment or conduct on-the-spot interviews, so participants are encouraged to dress accordingly and bring résumés. Many educational institutions will be present to share information about various career programs. Spokespersons for GCC occupational programs will explain career programs and certificates offered at the college, including biotechnology, automotives, law enforcement, truck driving, fire science and more.
